Taking Care of You
Ultrasound is painless, cost effective and has no known risks
All arteries are subject to the development of "hardening of the arteries" that can block blood flow to the heart, brain and legs causing disability and sometimes death
Veins can develop dangerous blood clots and the valves can degenerate causing painful and disfigured legs
Blood vessels become blocked with age
When blood cannot provide oxygen and glucose, tissue dies
We test for blocked arteries to help prevent stroke, help people with leg pain from reduced blood flow and look for enlarged blood vessels( aneurysm) that may burst. We are here to proevent disease and help physicians offter the best treatment alternatives
How do you or your physician know your vascular risk?
Medical history of stroke, heart attacks, etc
blood pressure, weight, cholesterol levels, smoking, activity level, etc
HOWEVER these are relatively poor indicators of future risk
Do I need to take drugs? Change my life style?
We do an Ultrasound Vascular Risk Assessment
We look at your blood vessels to really know what your risks are and if drugs or live style changes are necessary
Stroke
A stroke is when part of the brain dies and the patient is often left with a significant disability. Â A frequent cause is hardening of the arteries in the neck. Â A piece of debris breaks off and flies into the brain blockening blood from supplying oxygen and glucose to the brain tissue. Â It then dies and patients may be left severely disabled.
ULTRASOUND LOOKS AT THE CAROTID ARTERIES TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A BLOCKAGE AND STROKE RISK
leg pain with activity
leg pain can arise from blockage of the blood vessels
Atherosclerosis or "hardening of the arteries" can block blood flow. With activity the legs require more blood and if the arteries are blocked the oxygen and nutrients cannot be supplied. It is often described as pain when you walk and it resolves after stopping for 10 minutes and the blood supply catches up.
ULTRASOUND CAN LOOK AT ALL THE BLOOD VESSELS GOING TO THE LEGS AND DETERMINE IF A BLOCKAGE EXISTS, WHERE IT IS AND WHAT TREATMENTS MAY BE AVAILABLE
Leg Blood Clots
Leg blood clots can cause pulmonary embolism (trouble breathing, chest pain and sometimes death)
A blood clot in the veins of the leg can be very serious. It can break off and travel to the lungs and cause serious disease. Blood clots can arise from long plane flights, inactivity, cancer and other serious diseases.
ULTRASOUND CAN EXAMINE THE VEINS TO DETERMINE IF A BLOOD CLOT IS PRESENT AND IF IT RESOLVES WITH TREATMENT
Varicose Veins
ugly and painful bulging veins in the legs

Varicose veins arise because the valves in the veins become damaged and allow blood to flow backward from the heart to the legs. The veins become distended, sore and unsightly.
ULTRASOUND CAN STUDY THE VEINS AND VALVES TO SEE IF DAMAGED VALVES ARE PRESENT, WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED AND WHAT TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES MAY BE AVAILABLE
Aneurysms
An Aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel  that has a risk of rupture and patient death
ULTRASOUND OF THE ABDOMEN IS THE COMMONEST WAY TO FIND ANEURYSMS BEFORE THEY RUPTURE. IF FOUND THEY CAN BE FOLLOWED OR REFERRED TO A TREATMENT SPECIALIST DEPENDING ON THEIR SIZE
